"Structures come in several shapes"

Picture this: it’s a warm summer day and you’re sitting in your backyard gazebo, enjoying an afternoon breeze while reading a favorite book. Occasionally, you look up to take in the scenic view of a nearby pond and the natural greenery around it.

For Highland residents Phil and Barbara Slakoper, such a scenario is one they know well. Two years ago, they bought a screened-in 10-by-18-foot gazebo from John Morvillo, owner of Hudson Valley Barns in Highland, and set it on their lawn, enhancing their yard’s already picturesque setting which includes sight of their neighbor’s pond.

'The view is just beautiful,' said Barbara Slakoper.

The gazebo sits between the side and back of their house and can be seen by passersby and others...

'More than beauty'

So said Scott Neave, president of Neave Landscaping Inc. In Wappingers Falls, who added they work well in secluded garden areas and sites located near ponds or waterfalls.

'Putting it in a place where there’s a nice view of next to some kind of water feature, something interesting, I think, is its best use.' he said.

But gazebos can do more than create aesthetic appeal. They also can be a good place to relax.

'I’ve seen gazebos where they’re like outdoor living areas,' said Neave, with some outfitted with furniture and even television sets...
